The Expressive Creatrix (and Hobbyist)

I just finished this book, that took me well over a month to read.  It’s a long one, as Kaye’s books are, and a pretty good read.  Unfortunately, the majority of the book (the middle part) dragged for me.  I think there were several things that could have been left out or abbreviated without affecting the storyline.  The beginning quarter or so, and the final quarter, were very, very good.

I disliked the heroine throughout most of the book.  However, I think this is what the author intended.  Hero (yes, really, her name is Hero) changes through events, and in the end becomes much more likeable.  Set in the late 1800s in Zanzibar, this book fulfilled the last category for me in the pbs.com Historical Fiction 2011 Challenge, “It’s a Small World.”
